Greg Kolbinger is presented with the 2011 Iowa AHEC Service Award

As part of National AHEC Week, Des Moines University's AHEC Program awarded the second annual Iowa AHEC Service Award to Gregory Kolbinger in gratitude and recognition for his efforts in advancing AHEC initiatives. A dedicated supporter of AHEC, Greg has volunteered his time to provide high school and undergraduate students interested in the field of healthcare the opportunity to participate in Des Moines University's Iowa Simulation Center.

The Simulation Lab, a mock clinical setting complete with life-like mannequins, gives students a glimpse into patient care. As clinical director of the Simulation Lab, Greg's passion and enthusiasm for education made visits to the Sim Lab one of AHEC's most popular health career exploration experiences. In accordance with AHEC's mission to serve rural and underserved communities, Greg took the Sim Lab on the road, introducing high school students in three rural towns in western Iowa to the world of healthcare.

Greg's commitment to the mission of AHEC has also been observed in the integral role he has played in Camp YES MED, a one-week camp for high school juniors interested in science and medicine. A collaboration between DMU and Central Iowa AHEC staff, Camp YES MED provides a mixture of lectures and hands-on activities, allowing high schoolers to live the life of a medical student. With Greg's guidance, students used what they learned in lecture to diagnose and treat simulated patient care cases as part of a mock medical team.

Gregory Kolbinger, MPAS, PA-C, is an assistant professor in the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Des Moines University and formerly the clinical director of the Iowa Simulation Center. A graduate of DMU, he has been a clinical physician assistant in family practice, geriatrics and occupational medicine since 1985 and has worked at DMU for 19 years.
