Students participate in a mock emergency room scenario at Experience Health Day.

This past fall, high school students in West Central Iowa were given a special opportunity to learn more about working as a health professional in a hospital setting. West Central Iowa AHEC partnered with regional hospitals to offer several Experience Health Days for students interested in health careers.

Each event provided a unique experience, customized to the services offered by the host hospital. High school juniors from several area schools were educated through a variety of fun and interactive activities, such as intubating "Airway Larry," performing CPR on a mannequin and participating in a mock emergency room scenario.

Hospitals that hosted Experience Health Days included:

  • Alegent Health Community Memorial Hospital, Missouri Valley
  • Audubon County Memorial Hospital, Audubon
  • Burgess Memorial Health Center, Onawa
  • Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison
  • Manning Regional Healthcare Center, Manning
  • St. Anthony Regional Hospital & Nursing Home, Carroll
  • Stewart Memorial Community Hospital, Lake City

This first set of Experience Health Days was a huge hit with students, who were excited to have the opportunity to learn about health and science outside the classroom. West Central Iowa AHEC plans to hold more Experience Health Days this year and will expand to other hospitals and cities to reach more students.
