Second Annual YES MED Camp a Success

The annual Youth Education in Science and Medicine (YES MED) Camp was a tremendous success for the second straight summer. Central Iowa AHEC and Des Moines University offered 10 high school students from Des Moines and the surrounding area the opportunity to live the life of a medical student for five days by providing labs, lectures and hands-on activities that focused on the fundamentals of science and medicine.

YES MED Camp presented the fields of science, medicine and healthcare in challenging and innovative ways, giving students the knowledge and skills necessary to begin an exciting journey into a future health career. Working with DMU faculty and Central Iowa AHEC staff, campers explored microbiology, biochemistry, physiology, anatomy and a host of health careers. Among the many exciting activities, the students learned to test their blood glucose, cook nutritious meals, diagnose infectious diseases, record electrocardiograms (ECGs) and identify organs and bones.
