Central Iowa AHEC to Hold Workshop for Health Literacy Month

September 16th, 2010

Approximately one-half of adults in America have trouble understanding health information provided by their doctor and are therefore considered health illiterate. In celebration of Health Literacy Month, Central Iowa AHEC is helping to combat this problem by providing a continuing education workshop for health professionals. The workshop, titled "Symbolic Literacy," will provide an introduction for health professionals to communicating effectively with patients through the use of visual images. The course will discuss the implication of low symbolic literacy on the health status of patients and teach strategies to better communicate with patients visually.
