YES MED campers pose with the patient in the simulation lab

Central Iowa AHEC, in collaboration with Des Moines University, held a Youth Education in Science and Medicine (YES MED) camp for high school students entering their senior year. Nine students from Central Iowa lived the life of DMU medical students for five days, participating in hands-on activities, labs and lectures that focused on the fundamentals of science in conjunction with today's current medical practices. Topics included diabetes, cardiovascular and pulmonary anatomy and infectious diseases.

In addition, YES MED students, with guidance from DMU medical students, worked in the Iowa Simulation Center for Patient Safety and Clinical Skills on simulated patient care cases, incorporating skills learned throughout camp. One camper stated, "YES MED Camp was a great opportunity and experience! I highly recommend this to anyone who is even just slightly interested in science or medicine. The camp is fun, informational, labs and staff are outstanding and you build lifelong memories and friendships."
