Iowa AHEC Program

The Iowa Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Program recruits, trains and retains a health professions workforce committed to the medically underserved. Iowa AHEC combines best-practice methods of workforce development with creative collaborations among school systems, colleges and universities, health professionals, hospitals, health centers, public health venues and other key healthcare stakeholders. This is accomplished by teaching children about healthcare careers, offering clinical training sites for health profession students and supporting healthcare practitioners with continuing education programs.

Health Careers Exploration & Preparation

Programs are designed to expose students from kindergarten to college of the world of healthcare careers. By providing engaging, age-appropriate learning activities, AHEC nurtures an interest in science and medicine in the youth of the community.

Health Professions Student Training

Clinical experiences and training opportunities are provided in Iowa's rural and underserved areas to health professions students. By connecting students to the state's shortage areas, AHEC helps develop relationships for possible future practice where it is needed most.

Healthcare Professionals Training & Support

Continuing education courses are offered to professionals to strengthen practices. With classes that address cultural competency, health literacy and the unique issues affecting underserved areas, AHEC enhances the access to quality healthcare in Iowa's communities.
